>Rare is the friendship indeed that crosses over multiple generations – that is the unique relationship I have enjoyed with William B. Oelkers. Bill died unexpectedly Thursday in his home. I’ve known Bill forever. We went to scout camp together, played softball together, hung with the guys together and have always stayed connected; he even having served with his son Trent as our home teacher. Other than Rindy he is the one person who can call me Timmy without it bothering me.
Bill’s father was a dear friend of my father’s; having served as a counselor to my dad both in a bishopric and a stake presidency. His dad was a coach of mine as a young man and Lou Oelkers also died before his time a close friend to my dad till the end. Bill grew into a friendship with my dad. Bill was always a big supporter but my dad would also claim and clearly claim Bill as a friend. More so in later years as Bill would act as a realtor and confidant; and visit my father and mother. Bill is also a dear and valued friend of my children. I think Parker lays claim on the closest relationship. Bill taught Parker’s Sunday school class and the guys loved him. Bill is non-judgmental and accepts a teenager for what he is, Bill is candid in what he likes and dislikes without any political correctness in and about any subject including the church. His total genuine nature and loved unfeigned endeared him to youth.
And so with the passing of Bill - tears have come to my dad, tears have come to me, and tears have come to my children over the loss of a generational and dearly loved friend.
