leadership
Today I attended a training seminar on the subject of leadership. One fascinating fact to learn is there are over 366,00 book titles on the subject at Amazon. Which leaves one wondering if there is anything left to be said, or if the subject is totally personal. A few insightful quotes shared include:
Jim Valvano quotes
Be bold. If you're going to make an error, make a doozy, and don't be afraid to hit the ball.
Billie Jean King
- The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
- Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963
- Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.
- Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)

Five People - Lesson Two

Robert lent me the audio tapes of the book: Five People you meet in Heaven. I have read it before, enjoyed it, and am deriving pleasure from listening to this simple yet interesting story. Tonight driving to my Roundtable training meeting I listened to the second person and he second lesson to be learned.
The thoughts that struck me-"sacrifice is something to aspire to" and "That's the thing. Sometimes when you sacrifice something precious, you're not really losing it. You're just passing it on to someone else." -pg.94
I pondered why and how I find delight in sacrifice for my family an realized it resides in the essence of enjoying passing something along to those I love. I think there is a truth there. Its a lesson I'm learning.

Labor Day
Most Labor Days, of the past decade, have been spent on the west beach of Medicine Lake with friends, sunshine, water and food. Thankfully, due to gracious friends, we were able to keep the streak alive. Lake Michigan is a slightly larger lake and a slightly colder lake, and no pig roast. Jet skis are jet skis, sun is sun, good friends equate with good times.
We went to Michigan City.
A great sandy beach - uncrowded and clear water.
A wonderful close of the season.
With the dunes right there the only thing missing was Matt and Honor.

Back To School
Well, you thought I forgot to post the 2009 back to school photos. I misplaced the chord from the camera to the computer. So though Parker and Mackey have been back for a month today we post their photos. Parker the senior at Naperville North High School and Mackey the freshman at the same.

Scoreboard

Great game to watch with friends. The stadium scoreboard is over the top.

Oh, i guess the game results were as well.
(20) BYU 14, (3) Oklahoma 13
And a quick

Brigham's blog quickly grounded me in football's greatest touchdown. Running back . Evan, brought in the fourth quarter of Armstrong vs Minnetonka and a quick scamper in. Football was incredible for Evan. He made remarkable friends, had remarkable coaches, teammates, and opponents; and even more remarkable experiences - highlights coming in games ( JV and Varsity) with Cooper, and Wayzata, and the Minnetonka.

Windshield vs Rearview Mirror

I am not a huge Tom Daschle fan, however I recently read an article concerning him that contained a slogan he used with his family that I enjoy. “ The windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror.” Though he doesn’t explicate his exact meeting the context is clear enough..
There’s a reason why the rear view mirror is only a very small portion of the size of your overall front-window. It’s because you’re meant to only have your past be there for an occasional reference, only for periodic glimpses back. Your rear view mirror does little to help you navigate the road before you.
